Surgical Arm Prop Process
This prop was made with the idea of being used as a medical prop for a medical TV drama. The prop is based on an actual medical case that ended with invasive wrist surgery, and I wanted to create a prop that convincingly showcased the surgery.
Carving
-
Marking out
Following my reference image, marking out the boundary of the surgical site in pencil.
-
Blocking out the shape
I began slowly chipping into the plaster, and my aim was to begin creating the depth.
-
Detailed carve
The final carve, after creating more depth, definition and adding texture.
Latex Skin
Filled arm cavity with Chavant Clay
Latex once dried and pinned before being trimmed to correct shape
Painted thickened latex over clay to create skin fold

-
Unrendered
Here is how the arm turned out straight out of the mould; there were a fair amount of air bubbles that I was able to fix with a hair dryer and a paintbrush.
-
Rendered
I used alcohol paints to render the arm, they are incredibly durable along with being translucent as I wanted to emulate the translucency of skin.
